For the Syrup
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.

Step 1 Sift the dry ingredients and cut in the shortening.
Step 2 Add the milk to make a soft dough.
Step 3 Spread evenly on a well-greased 13 x 9 x 21/2-inch ovenproof dish.
Step 4 Spread the fruit over the dough. Bring the syrup ingredients to a boil in a small saucepan and cook for 3 or 4 minutes.
Step 5 Pour over the fruit and bake for 45 minutes.
Step 6 Serve hot or at room temperature.
