How to Use the College GPA Calculator
Using this tool effectively helps you stay on track for graduation and scholarships. Follow this step-by-step guide to get the most accurate results.
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- Enter Course Name: Type in the name of your classes (e.g., “English 101”). This helps you keep track when you print the PDF.
- Assign Credits: Enter the credit hours for each class. Most standard college courses are 3 or 4 credits.
- Select Your Grade: Use the dropdown to select the grade you received or expect to receive. Our calculator includes +/- grades for precision.
- Add Rows: Click “Add Another Course” to include your full semester schedule.
- Calculate: Hit the green button to see your GPA instantly.
The Basic Formula
The calculator uses the Weighted Average formula to ensure accuracy:
GPA=∑Total Credits∑(Grade Points×Credits)
For example, if you get an A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class, the math looks like this:
- (4.0×3)+(3.0×4)=12+12=24 total points
- 24 points/7 total credits=3.43 GPA
Record, Save, and Update
- Record: Use the Target GPA Strategy tool at the bottom to see how your current semester affects your overall goal.
- Save: Click the “Export to PDF” button. This creates a timestamped document you can save to your phone or laptop.
- Update: Come back during finals week to plug in different “what-if” scenarios to see the minimum grades you need to keep your financial aid or honors status.
