Lesson 8 Directions & Transport Fiji has a unique transport system. You’ll see big open-window buses, yellow taxis, and “carriers” (small trucks with a canopy). Knowing how to signal them and where to go is key.

2. Where are you going?
- I vei? Where?
- I matau: To the right.
- I mawi: To the left.
- I liu: Forward / Ahead.
- I muri: Behind / Back.
- Kele: To park / To stop (very important for getting off the bus).
Daily Important Conversation: In the Taxi or Bus
Fijian bus drivers often wait for you to pull a cord or shout “Kele!” to stop.
- Driver: Bula! I vei na vanua? (Hello! Where to?)
- You: I na koro, kere kere. (To the village, please.)
- You (when you arrive): Kele mada! (Please stop/park!)
- Driver: Sa rauta oqo? (Is here okay?)
- You: Io, vinaka. E vica na i-sau? (Yes, thanks. How much is the fare?)
