Batter Bread Recipe This is a sticky quick bread best eaten fresh, although it makes wonderful toast and croutons.

Batter Bread Recipe with Yeast

INGREDIENTS :- Serves Makes 2 loaves

  • 3 cups sour milk
  • 1 tablespoon (1 envelope) dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons shortening

Step 1 Heat the sour milk until it is warm to the touch. Add the yeast and allow it to dissolve. While the milk is heating, mix the dry ingredients and combine with the shortening.

Step 2 Combine the milk and yeast with half the flour mixture. Add the remainder of the flour mixture and beat until smooth. Cover with a cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size ( 1 to 11/2 hours ).

Step 3 Stir down and place in 2 well-greased 95/8 x 5 1/2 x 23A -inch pans. Cover with a cloth and let rise to the top of the pans.

Step 4 Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Step 5 When the dough has risen, bake for 40 to 45 minutes.
